Anna R. E. Kleckner, affectionately referred to as Pidge by her loved ones, passed away peacefully at age 94, in the presence of her family after a short illness, on January 2, 2025. Born on July 15, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, Anna embodied a life of service, dedication, and vibrant energy that touched many.

Anna was the beloved daughter of the late John and Anna Kleckner (nee Halko), sister and sister-in-law to the late Bertha Butchko (nee Kleckner) and Alexander Butchko. As an aunt and great aunt, she cherished her role in the lives of Kathleen DeAngelo (nee Butchko) wife of Donald, Anne Mawson (nee Butchko) wife of Robert, the late Paul Jared DeAngelo, Natalie Renee DeAngelo, and Christopher Robert Mawson and his wife Katie (nee Lynch). Her love extended to her great-great-niece, Avery Anne Mawson. She took joy in the achievements and milestones of her nieces, nephews, and their children, celebrating each of their successes as her own, enveloping them all in a warmth and kindness that will be deeply missed.

A graduate of West Tech High School in Cleveland, Anna's spirit of adventure and patriotism led her to join the Navy in 1955. She had an illustrious career in the United States Navy, retiring thirty years later with the distinguished rank of E-9, Master Chief Petty Officer Photographer's Mate. During her tenure, she was honored as Tidewater Wave of the Year in 1967 at the Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia, an accolade that highlighted her exceptional capabilities and professionalism. The accolade, as reported by the Virginia-Pilot newspaper, recognized Anna for her "sharpness," a trait highly valued by her superiors. Following her retirement from active service, Anna continued her association with the Navy, taking on a civilian role at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. Her responsibilities included operating a forklift in the supply warehouse, and ensuring Navy servicemen and other departments received their orders promptly and efficiently. Anna's life was not all work; she embraced a variety of sports as a younger adult, actively participating in basketball, softball, bowling, tennis, and golf. Her love for reading, volunteering at the hospital gift shop, and participating in cycling classes at the gym showcased her zest for life and her commitment to community. A devout attendee of Bible studies, Anna's faith was a guiding light in her life and she was known among her many friends for her loving, faith-filled, and generous nature. A dog lover, Anna's companions over the years were her beloved English Sheep Dogs, all fondly named Trolley, and a two little mutts named Tiki and Misty. Now, she joins them in eternal rest. She journeyed from her home in Florida to New Jersey twice a year to visit her family. During these treasured visits, she relished dining out, trips to Atlantic City, and attending Broadway plays. She ensured she was present for all the family milestones, cherishing each moment spent with her loved ones. Professionally, Anna left a legacy of leadership and mentorship, having run the WAVE Barracks at Norfolk, housing 178 Waves. She fondly referred to herself as "a sort of glorified den mother," providing guidance and support to many young women under her charge. Anna's passion for her craft was evident in her dream job at the Naval Photographic Center, where she played an integral role in processing color film. Recognized for her excellence, she was the honor graduate of the Navy's "B" School for Photographers in 1963 as well as honor woman in her boot camp. Anna's life was a testament to her resilient and giving spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of love, and commitment, to family and friends, both in and outside the military.

Her presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew her, but her influence will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of her cherished family and numerous friends. Rest in peace, dear Anna, knowing that your life was a beacon of generosity and love that illuminated the lives of many.
